Kagan Sworn in as 112th Justice to Serve on the Supreme Court

WASHINGTON D.C. - Elena Kagan has been sworn in as the 112th justice and fourth woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath to Kagan in a ceremony Saturday at the court. Joined by family and friends, Kagan pledged in the oath to faithfully and impartially uphold the law.

Afterward, she smiled broadly as onlookers stood and applauded. The former Harvard Law School dean was most recently solicitor general. President Barack Obama chose her to succeed retired Justice John Paul Stevens. Republicans criticized her as a political liberal, but the Senate confirmed her this past week on a vote of 63-to-37.

She isn't expected to alter the ideological balance of the court, where Stevens was considered a leader of the liberals.
