UPDATE: Mom Says She Slapped Baby Who Kicked Her On Flight

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Southwest Airlines says its flight attendants are "empowered to simply do the right thing," after one of the airline's employees took a 13-month-old girl from a
mother who had slapped the child on a flight to Albuquerque.

The mother told aviation police she hit her crying daughter on Monday's flight because the child kicked her. Flight attendant Beverly McCurley told the officers she saw the mother hit the child on the face with her open hand.

McCurley also told authorities the child had a black eye, which her parents said came from a dog bite. Southwest wouldn't provide details of how flight attendants are trained to deal with such situations, but says they are empowered to, "maintain the security and the comfort of all of customers onboard."

The baby was checked out by paramedics at Albuquerque airport, a scheduled stop on the flight to Seattle.
