Rotting Tree Falls On Liberty Lake Home

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - A tree falls on a house in Liberty Lake and this time the wind is not the cause. There wasn't a breeze in the sky when a massive tree branch snapped from a big black locust tree on East Sprague Avenue across from the Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Barbara Midkiff said she was outside when the section of tree fell on her neighbor's home.

"I just happened to stand up and see it fall. I thought it was an explosion really," said Midkiff.

The tree appears to have gone through the roof, but not one was hurt. Barbara Midkiff watched from the street and says she's actually not surprised.

"So many of these trees are rotten. Some of the arborists have come out and said they were rotten. Every tree has a life expectancy and these have gone way beyond it," said Midkiff.

The trees line both sides of the street. Neighbors say they've been there for 60 years.

Barbara's husband Gene says they've tried to get the trees removed, petitioning the county and the city, but so far no action has been taken. Now they worry what will happen next. In the meantime, Gene and Barbara Midkiff suggest taking a different route.

"Don't drive on this street. I'll go around the block. I know people feel they're protected but I don't think it's safe," said Gene Midkiff.

"We're afraid someone is going to get killed," said Barbara Midkiff.

Due to the holiday on Monday, neither the county nor the city offices could be reached.
