First Of 1,500 Idaho Troops Depart For Mission In Iraq

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The first of some 1,500 troops with the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team have left Idaho for training in Camp Shelby, Miss., before they are deployed to Iraq.

The departures began Monday and were expected to continue on Tuesday.

Among them is Spc. Denise Mealer, a military mechanic and a stay-at-home mom to 17-month-old Zakary. Denise is leaving her son behind with her husband, Jarid, in Twin Falls.

The Idaho Statesman reports that Denise is taking one of Zakary's blankets and a bear to stay connected with her baby.

Approximately 2,700 members of the 116th in all are headed for Iraq.
