Main Runway At Spokane International Airport Set To Re-Open

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane International Airport announced that effective 8:00 a.m. PDT, Thursday, September 23, their main runway, 3/21, will be open for flight operations at its new, full 11,002' length. Last week, the Federal Aviation Administration successfully flight tested and certified Runway 21 – the northeast approach to the airfield – for precision Category III Instrument Landings, which are utilized during low visibility conditions. The same procedures will be followed and completed for Runway 3 – approaching the airfield from the southwest – on November 18, 2010.

Acme Concrete Paving, Inc. of Spokane was awarded the $30,734,859 Runway Extension project at the April 15, 2009 meeting of the Spokane Airport Board. During last year's portion of the project, Acme installed utility infrastructure, relocated Electric Avenue, graded 300,000 yards of soil, and installed new navigational aid buildings to enable equipment installation in 2010. The actual construction of the 2,000' long x 150' wide runway as well as the 2,000' x 75' wide extension of the parallel Taxiways A (west or the passenger Terminal facilities side) and "G" (east side), commenced in March and was substantially completed at the end of July this year.

The two year project was financed entirely by the $4.50 Passenger Facility Charge that is assessed on each departing passenger's ticket.
