Juggling Our Little Family of Four

Mom, Dad, Toddler, Infant...add pets to the fray and you have one busy house of Jones!

Where to begin...Let's start with Victor.  Victor is now 2 years old.  His vocabulary is growing by the second.  We're just getting potty-training (or "potty-learning" as I've heard it called) underway.  He's started to request trips to the bathroom and can almost take his pants down by himself.  He had his first "all-by-myself" tinkle moment yesterday with Daddy - you'd think we had landed on the moon with the level of excitement the two of them had for the incident!  We still think he has a little ways to go with the recognition of the "I have to go" sensation, so we aren't ready to fully commit to underpants - though, we did buy him some & he looks so darling in those tiny briefs!

Being that Vic is 2, we are also deep in the world of discipline.  I've read in so many different books that "children crave discipline and structure."  Yes, they do.  Now, some types of discipline and structure work better than others (and I'm sure it differs from child to child, too) - as we've found.  We read "The Happiest Toddler on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp and "Positive Discipline" by Dr. James Dobson - two almost opposing methods of discipline and strucutre - and we discovered that a careful blend of the two works for us.   The "rug" is well-known in our house now.  "You can finish your tantrum on the rug."  "No hit!  Go to the rug!"  "We don't throw toys in anger.  Finish being angry on the rug.  Come out when you're happy or can talk nice about it."   Lately, Victor has been playing imaginary-discipline with his toys and his Uncle, Kevin.  I'll hear Victor playing in his room..."No, Debin.  No!  Rug, Debin.  Nice.  Nice, Debin.  Nice?  Okay.  Nice.  Happy?  Okay.  Play!  Fun!"  I think he might just get it!

Rickey is doing well - growing like a weed.  Our little 4-month old boy is now nearly 20 pounds.  We just had to buy another car seat, as he's outgrown his infant carrier!   Things have definitely been easier the 2nd time around, mostly because we know what to expect.  Unfortunately, it's gone by so much faster, too.   The "live-and-learn" little tricks we've picked up have been great, though.  Billy figured one out -- we use disposable liner-bottles for breastmilk when it's just Billy & the boys.  He took a cooler with a bottle in it and a thermos of boiling water to the park.  Now, usually, when doing this, we/he will bring a large cup along to put the hot water & bottle in.  This particular trip to the park, Billy forgot the cup.  When I put diapers in the diaper-bag, I like to keep them in gallon-size Ziploc bags (just in case of a sippy-explosion or other wet mess).  Billy figured out that he could use the Ziploc bag for the water & bottle.  He poured the water in the bag, put the bottle in the bag, sucked the air out of the bag and the bottle warmed up twice as fast!  What a great discovery!   Now I keep a few extra Ziploc bags in the diaper-bag for just such use.

Rickey loves to laugh - especially at his brother.  Whenever Victor is crying, Rickey cries.  When Victor laughs, Rickey laughs.  I can already tell they're going to be the best of friends.  I'm a little nervous for when Rickey becomes mobile (he can already roll over both ways) - as the two of them together will become unstoppable.  If Rickey is anything like I was with my big sister, Victor will have a "barnacle" for the rest of his life!
