Downtown Spokane Foot Pursuit; Read The Official Press Release

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: On Tuesday afternoon Spokane Police Officer A. Kirby was patrolling the downtown business corridor when he observed a vehicle fail to stop at the red light at Lincoln and Main. Officer Kirby managed to get behind the violator (Jonathan D. Atabelo 11/8/79) and before he had a chance to initiate the traffic stop, Atabelo slammed his vehicle into park. Atabelo jumped out and began running from Officer Kirby, leaving his vehicle stopped in the traffic lane, causing severe traffic congestion.  Atabelo also left his small child inside the vehicle while he tried to avoid arrest.

Ofc. Kirby engaged in a foot pursuit to apprehend the driver; the pursuit went around the Federal Building, into the Spokane Public Library, back out and inside Riverfront Park Square.

Atabelo was eventually captured when he ran out the north exit of RFP Square and into the arms of Officer D. Kennedy.

Atabelo was arrested and booked into SCJ for Resisting Arrest, Driving While License Suspended 1st degree and Abandonment of a Dependent Person 3rd degree.

Atabelo had a non bookable misdemeanor warrant out of Grant County; which may have been why he initially attempted to avoid capture.

Responding officers stayed with the small child during the foot pursuit and subsequent arrest.  The child's mother worked nearby and responded to take responsibility of the child.
