Fire Destroys Garage In Browne's Addition

SPOKANE, Wash. - Multiple incidents in the downtown area Tuesday afternoon put a strain on fire resources.

At around 3:30 PM fire crews responded to a garage fire at 2230 West Pacific Avenue in Browne's Addition. When firefighters arrived they found a two-story, multiple vehicle garage heavily involved with flames and endangering nearby apartment buildings to the east and west of the garage. The call was immediately upgraded to a "working fire," which automatically adds an additional fire company and other Fire Department resources to the call.

However, due to a nearly simultaneous incident at 3rd and Maple where a vehicle was involved in a fire and thought to have two people trapped, the normally nearby fire companies were not available. This caused stations farther away to respond to the garage fire and led to a longer than expected delay and rapid fire growth on the garage call.

Once additional companies arrived on scene, firefighter quickly forced entry into areas of the garage and made an offensive attack on the fire with aggressive ventilation. After a complete search it was determined that there were no occupants in the garage and the fire was extinguished within 30 minutes.

Four vehicles were destroyed and the garage sustained varied levels of damage. The cause is still under investigation.
