SPD: Cold Case Murder Solved
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: On October 22, 2010, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office located and arrested Gary L. Trimble (7/6/48) in Lincoln, Montana for a probation violation. Meanwhile Spokane Police Major Crimes Detective Kip Hollenbeck obtained an arrest warrant for Trimble, charging him with the 1986 murder of Dorothy E. Burdette.
On December 26, 1986, the body of Dorothy Burdette was found under the I-90 in High Bridge Park. She had been wrapped in a blanket, and appeared to have been transported to that location. The autopsy revealed Burdette had suffered multiple blunt force trauma injuries and appeared to have been sexually assaulted.
No viable suspects were identified during the initial investigation.
In 2005, evidence from the scene was submitted to the WSP Crime Lab for DNA Analysis.
In 2008, the Crime Lab reported that semen had been identified on the victim's bra and on the blanket. A single male profile was developed from these semen samples and entered into CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), no matches were found.
On October 21, 2010, CODIS notified the Crime Lab of a recently submitted DNA profile that matched Gary L. Trimble. Detective Hollenbeck was able to develop probable cause to arrest Trimble for Burdette's murder, thus solving a 24 year old cold case.
