Post Falls Hunters Found: 'Man We Were Praying Hard'

  • Our Mike Perry is gathering more details for you and new video. Look for his LIVE report tonight on KHQ Local News at 5 and 6.

AVERY, Idaho - A helicopter crew plucked a hunter and his 14-year-old daughter from a mountainous and remote area of northern Idaho Thursday morning after the pair had been missing for three days following a snowstorm.

A spokesman at the Fairchild Air Force Base's 36th Rescue Flight in Spokane, Wash., says 37-year-old Matthew Gering and his daughter, Kia, of Post Falls had no injuries when they were hoisted to the helicopter in a basket and flown to a command post in Avery, Idaho.

Gering says they became stranded after running over a log causing a flat tire. Unfortunately the two didn't have a lug wrench to change the tire. Gering didn't think that his daughter could hike out so he stayed at the truck until help arrived.

Staff Sgt. J.G. Buzanowski says the two were rescued in a rugged area in the Mammoth Springs area just southeast of Avery where two feet of snow had fallen Monday night.

Authorities say Gering and his daughter went hunting Monday and were supposed to contact relatives in Post Falls that evening but did not.

The two rationed the food and water but with limited supplies they ran out. "So I told Kiyah we were going to go out and get some food, so I brought back an elk and smoked every last bit of it,' said Matthew Gering.

More than 2 dozen people helped in the search. The search was organized by the St. Joe Valley Search & Rescue Team.
