San Francisco Bans The Happy Meal; What You're Writing On Our FB Wall
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - For some veggies-hating children, Happy Meals won't be so happy anymore.
San Francisco lawmakers approved legislation Tuesday that would limit toy giveaways in children's meals that have excessive calories, sodium and fat. It also requires servings of fruits or vegetables with each meal.
The city's Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the ordinance, which they hope will force fast-food chains such as McDonald's to make their children's meals healthier or stop selling them with toys.
The measure drew enough support to overcome an expected veto by Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Supervisors say the law would make San Francisco the first major city to take this action to combat childhood obesity.
McDonald's has said the law threatens business and restricts parents' ability to make choices for their children.
WHAT YOU'RE WRITING ON OUR FACEBOOK WALL:
Melissa Ochoa: i dont think thats gonna make a difference, you can still buy all of that stuff but just not in a meal. stupid and pointless
TimandLaura Jane Turnbull: I think it is ignorant. but then again SF has never been known for its smart choices.
Andrew Bodenstein: It makes sense, enticing kids to unhealthy food with toys is kinda wrong if you think about it.
Pam Krogel- Wellington: Too extreme. Nothing wrong with a Happy Meal once in awhile. Do they really think this is going to make the parents who feed this crap to their kids on a constant basis suddenly stop? No, they will just find fast junk somewhere else to feed them. They need to ban stupidity.
Dwight Wickham: No toys? Well, lets get some extra fries! lol jkng Its too bad the government has to poke its nose into issues such as these
Glenn Lefebvre: Ahh, the Peoples Republic of California does it once again.
Shane Lindsay Walters: NOOOOO!!!! You cannot take away the Happy Meal! It is a symbol of childhood in this country. People need to just monitor their own kids, don't ruin it for the rest of us! I still love a happy meal...it's the perfect size!
Becky Hepting: sorry kids you cannot have a happy meal it is now illegal seriously?! Quit putting limits on our freedoms if a person wants to feed their kids happy meals everyday it is none of the governments business!
Savannah Tuter: that is the most ridiculous thing iv heard in a while!
Phill Supita: So....it's the toy that makes kids fat? Sweet, I'm going to save a bundle this Christmas!
Justin Nagel: How about banning in the opposite way. Ban the food but not the toys. Geez. How stupid. It's not like they can't go through and order the food they want.
Tammy Roberts: I think it is extreme - if you don't want your kids to eat it, you don't have to go there, or order it! McDonald's already offers choices in those meals!
Amber Lynne Smith: So my daughter has to suffer without an occiasonal happy meal toy because other parents feed it to their kids daily and then blame the fast food industry for their bad parenting?
Janis Goings: tv stations need to hire proof readers
Mary Evans Mcbeth: it is my decision whether or not to go, my daugther is not worried about toy, but if it comes in a box or bag, she prefers the box, might as well go after BK, Wendy's, Jack in the Box, why stop with McD's, this is a stupid, there are bigger problems out in the world
TimandLaura Jane Turnbull: @ Andrew, My granddaughter doesn't even know toys come in the meals ( at BK that is MCD"S sux). she gets a BK kids meal twice a month and she thinks I bought the toy at the store. and it is the PARENTS not the kids who order this so how do toys entice kids to buy it? THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO BUT THE HELL OUT!!!!!! THEY SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT WAY MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES THAN TRYING TO DICTATE TO PEOPLE. HEY POLITICAL MORONS..WORRY ABOUT YOUR OWN FAMILY AND STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM MINE.
Jeanette Christina Bocook: Is it not extreme to feed children low grade corn fed animal carcus and French fries that are made out of genetically modified potatoes that are spliced with preservatives and salt that DO not decompose? Childern and Aduls alike will suffe...r from this because are bodies are not meant to consume these items. And where do you think those TOYS come from? Perhaps a huge Chinese factory with thousands of workers, including plenty of minors with work related health issues. And that is putting it so nicely. People's ignorance creates the inability to see the REAL issues at hand, and that is what is so EXTREME.
Lisa Olmer Wilson: I still don't see the point. It's like banning those caffeine enriched alcoholic beverages. How hard is it going to be for a Mom to get a small fry, cheeseburger, drink and a toy. Throw them in a bag, and voila.
Stephanie Belnap: Not being a fan of the chain this doesn't effect our family, But I think it's wrong that lawmakers are trying to DICTATE what can & can not be consumed, especially since its been around for a very very long time. Looks like other fast food places will be picking up business as McD's isn't the only who offers these kids meals.
Robert Lee: i think San Francisco is crazy i mean come on ban happy meals whats next. Happy meals have been around even before i was born
Aimee Flinn Nechanicky: I personally like the Arby's kids meal...
Jessica Edgar Worley: This isn't that surprising considering a California school board also banned the Merriam-Webster version of the dictionary from being used in schools. What ever happened to 'teach them the correct principles and let them govern themselves"?
Katrina Keithley: Childhood obesity is kinda like sex education....knowledge is power! If the government wants to stick their nose into this issue, they should go to the root of the problem...which is lack of education on what is healthy, portion control, etc. As a parent, educating my kid goes a lot farther than telling them what they can't do.
