Teen Pageant Winner Hailed As Hero

SPOKANE, Wash. - Her official talent was "cheer dancing," but we also wonder if a 15-year-old pageant winner in Spokane specializes in helping people in need.

JJ Brown is the reigning "Miss Spokane Outstanding Teen" a title bestowed in a little sister pageant of the larger "Miss Spokane."

Brown was dressed in full pageant regalia, including crown, on November third when she was scheduled to sing for local veterans.  She and her mom were driving to the performance venue when they noticed a homeless woman hunched on a freeway exit ramp.

Brown said the woman could have fallen towards speeding traffic and appeared to be in danger.  The teenager jumped out of her mom's car at the nearest stoplight and ran to the woman.  Her mom called 9-1-1.

Brown escorted the woman to the side of the road and comforted the homeless woman until police and medics arrived.

"He (the officer) said he's seen pretty much everything as an officer," she said.  "But he was talking about how this is his first time ever seeing a princess rescue a homeless lady."

Brown credits her membership in the Campfire organization for teaching her compassion for others.  She hopes to compete in more pageants and would like to be "Miss America" someday.
