SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police were called to the Hillyard area Saturday night after a call came in about an armed man at the Special K Pub. When police arrived they located the suspect in the parking lot with a pistol. Shots were fired and the suspect was killed. Although the identity of the man has not been officially released, friends and family tell KHQ the man is 34-year-old Jeremy Groom. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday and the Spokane County Sheriff's Department continues the investigation under the Critical incident Protocol.

Official Press Release:

A 34-year-old man died late Saturday during a confrontation with Spokane police officers in the parking lot of a Hillyard tavern.

The identity of the deceased man was withheld Saturday night. An autopsy will likely be Monday morning and the Medical Examiner's office will release his name afterward.

The incident began about 9:33 p.m. when a woman called 911 and reported there was an armed man in the Special K Tavern at 3800 N. Market.  Officers were dispatched and as they responded, the complainant gave information that her companion had gone outside with the man to "talk him down."

Officers arrived at 9:36 p.m. and began walking into the scene.  They located the suspect in the parking lot of the tavern.

Shots were fired and the suspect was killed, despite the efforts of officers who performed CPR.  The suspect's pistol was found nearby.

Spokane police invoked the Critical Incident Protocol and investigative response teams comprised of police, sheriff's office and Washington State Patrol detectives were called to investigate.  The sheriff's office will lead the investigation.

Market Street was closed north and south of  Garland, and Garland was closed a block to the west of  the tavern.

Investigators located a number of witnesses at the scene, but suspect some may have left prior to the arrival of detectives.  Anyone with information  regarding  the incident  who  has not  already spoken with investigators is encouraged to leave contact information  by calling Crime Check at 456-2333.
