NEW DETAILS: County Budget Saves Critical Sheriff, Jail Positions
SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane County commissioners have tentatively approved a budget that will allow Sheriff Knezovich to keep 9 deputies he would otherwise have at layoff. The Sheriff had said losing those deputies would have put public safety at a critical level. The original plan called for 18 layoffs, but 9 of those positions will be lost to attrition.
The commissioners said in their budget meeting with the CEO this morning they would fund the nearly $727,000 from reserves.
The Sheriff will also be granted 21 positions back in the county jail. Those positions were lost to cuts last year. Those let go can be hired back first based on seniority.
The budget still needs final approval by the commissioners expected later today.
