Federal Report Faults Unsanitary Washington Cheese Company
YAKIMA, Wash. - A federal inspection report is faulting an artisan cheese maker who is known as a pioneer in the industry for unsanitary practices.
Sally Jackson Cheese of Oroville, Wash., voluntarily recalled all of its cheese Friday after the Food and Drug Administration warned that the products could be contaminated by E. coli. Eight people in Washington, Oregon, Minnesota and Vermont have been sickened, one of whom was briefly hospitalized.
An FDA report released Wednesday says the owner wore manure-soiled clothing during cheese production and milked livestock and stirred cheese curds with bare hands that hadn't been washed.
But owner Sally Jackson, who has made cheese for 30 years, disputes the report's findings. She says she plans to shut down her business and is brokenhearted about how it's ending.
