UPDATE: Vehicle Split In Half During Pursuit

LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) - Police say a short, high-speed chase through Lakewood ended with the fleeing car torn in half after crashing into a tree.

Lakewood police Lt. Chris Lawler says the chase began when a Lakewood police officer spotted a car that had been reported stolen earlier Tuesday.

He says once the driver saw the officer he sped off, reaching speeds of up to 70 miles per hour on city streets.

But the chase didn't last long, a couple of minutes after speeding off the suspect driver hit a curb, flipping the car and hitting the tree.

Lawler says the driver is lucky to be alive and unhurt. The car was completely torn in half with debris thrown around the street. The driver was taken to a local hospital and was set to be discharged and arrested on Tuesday.
