Postal Inspector Investigates Dozens of PO Box Break-Ins

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – Nearly 50 post office boxes were burglarized or damaged when someone broke into mailboxes at the Opportunity branch of the post office on East Sprague this weekend.

Postal employees arrived to work on Monday morning to find 30 post office boxes and 18 lockers designed to hold packages had been damaged. Authorities said it is impossible to determine how much, if anything, was actually stolen.

The postal inspector sent customers a note asking them to contact their bank if they were expecting credit or debit cards.

"It's alarming," said Joan Nolan who started renting a box after someone stole mail from her mailbox at home several years ago. "I'd like to think that everything here is safe and locked-up, I'd like to think this is a safer place for mail."

A post office spokeswoman said while theft of mail is often reported from personal mailboxes, she could not remember the last time a PO Box was burglarized.

The postal inspector is reviewing video footage from cameras in the area. Authorities declined to specify what, if anything, was captured on camera over the weekend.
