KHQ EXCLUSIVE: Rogers High School Fight Caught On Cell Phone Video

SPOKANE, Wash. – The parent of a high school student suspended for fighting says her daughter was only trying to defend herself when cell phone cameras caught a fight at Rogers High School.

Virla Spencer told KHQ Local News her daughter was suspended for 10 days because of a fight in the cafeteria.  Spencer said her daughter was trying to defend herself after someone else started the fight.

School administrators said privacy laws prevent them from discussing discipline for specific students, but officials said at least three students were suspended for fighting and several others were suspended for encouraging the fight.

An assistant principal said multiple witnesses were interviewed before discipline was handed down to the fight participants.

"I can say that we respond to the individual student, we respond to the circumstance and we apply what we think is appropriate and fair discipline," said Mary Templeton, Assistant Principal at Rogers High School

Templeton said the number of suspensions handed down this school year has decreased and that classroom attendance has increased.  She said they remain committed to reducing fights on campus by encouraging students to use other resources like counselors to resolve disputes.
