UPDATE: Man Hit & Killed By Spokane Police Officer At Intersection

UPDATE: The Spokane Medical examiners says that 52-year-old John A. VanCurler died from the cause of a fracture of the C1-C2 spinal column with transection of the spinal cord due to a blunt impact to the head.

RELEASE FROM THE Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team: Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team detectives met early Tuesday to share investigative results with each other and to map out specific areas of additional inquiry regarding Sunday night's fatal officer-involved auto-pedestrian collision.

The team consists of investigators from the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Spokane Police Department and Washington State Patrol.

On Sunday night, an SPD patrolman was southbound on Monroe when he struck a pedestrian at its intersection with Montgomery. The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at a downtown hospital.

The officer, an eight-year veteran, was taken to the Public Safety Building while detectives began their investigation of the accident scene.

As is routine in all serious injury or fatality collision investigations, the officer was asked to provide a blood sample. He voluntarily did so. Test results usually take six to eight weeks to be completed by the Washington State Toxicology Lab.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the man killed as 52-year-old John A. VanCurler of Spokane. Autopsy was completed Monday.

Detectives early Monday completed their search and mapping of the collision scene and later in the day completed processing the Crown Victoria patrol car for evidence. It has been released back to the City of Spokane.

Also Monday a sheriff's office computer forensics specialist began processing the officer's Mobile Data Computer. Copies of the 911/Crime Check call and dispatch records also have been requested.

Determination of the point of impact between the decedent and patrol car as well as the car's speed remains unconfirmed. Detectives will program specific distances and landmarks into traffic collision formulas to attempt to determine both in coming days.

The involved SPD officer has been placed on leave.

SIRR Team investigators reported that they have interviewed witnesses who saw events prior to and after the accident, but are still looking for anyone who witnessed the actual collision. They also said they would like to hear from motorists who were in that area around 10 p.m.

Persons with information can contact them by calling Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
