United Temporarily Grounds 96 Aircraft
CHICAGO (AP) - United Continental Holdings says some 96 United Airlines aircraft have been temporarily grounded voluntarily while the carrier performs maintenance checks that were not completed.
Tuesday's grounding has caused at least 17 flights to be canceled and an unspecified number of delays. The maintenance checks take 60 to 90 minutes.
The issue could affect United's schedule into Wednesday. Airline spokeswoman Megan McCarthy says United grounded the Boeing 757 aircraft because the carrier determined that it had not
completed operational checks after updating air data computers following a 2004 federal directive.
An FAA spokeswoman said United's move was voluntary. It only affected United's fleet of Boeing 757s. McCarthy says Continental's fleet of 62 757s weren't grounded.
Officials at Spokane International report no planes are affected here.
