Seattle Man Arrested In Spokane For Child Rape

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE: Deputies arrested a 67-year-old Seattle man Monday morning after learning he had sexually assaulted his 11 and 8-year-old nieces.

James E. Norby was booked into the Spokane County Jail on First-Degree Child Rape and First-Degree Child Molestation charges about 11 a.m. Monday.

Deputy Jim Reed was called to the victims' home in North Spokane County about 9 a.m. and learned from their parents that Norby was in town for a visit and had spent the night in a downstairs bedroom.

The girls sleep in separate bedrooms, but at some point both ended up in the same bed as the uncle. When the 11-year-old awoke Monday, she discovered Norby in the act of the sexual assault.

She immediately reported the matter to her parents and they confronted Norby.  The parents told Reed that the suspect admitted the act to them, and also admitted the inappropriate touching of the still-sleeping younger girl.

Reed seized bedding and the girls' night clothes as evidence.

Norby has no prior criminal history in Spokane County.  The matter has been referred to sheriff's sex crimes detectives to determine if additional criminal charges are warranted.
