Spokane County Jail Back On Critical Status

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE>> The Spokane County Jail returned to Critical Status Monday morning after the inmate count exceeded the maximum 650 inmates. Jail population was at 660 inmates with another 171 at the Geiger Corrections Center.

Jail Commander John McGrath said that inmate populations tend to be higher on Mondays and then usually drop after those arrested over the weekend make their first appearances in court.

However, he added that staff recently has seen a trend of increasing local inmate population and are dealing with it by reducing the federal inmate population somewhat.

"We house federal inmates so that we are not paying staff to watch empty beds, but there is an inmate cap," he said. "We allow them to exceed that cap as long as we don't need those beds for local inmates. As soon as we do, some federal inmates are moved out."

The jail population pushed the facility into Critical Status last week, but the count had dropped again by Thursday. Under Critical Status, new book-ins are limited to:

  • Any felony charge or felony warrant.
  • All probation violations or U.S. Marshal holds.
  • Legislatively-mandated custodial arrests for domestic violence charges/warrants.
  • All new DUI arrests and warrants.
  • Warrants that prohibit release on own recognizance.

No other misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor charges can be booked without the arresting officer's supervisor contacting a jail shift sergeant to arrange an exception.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Neighbors and business owners in Hillyard tell KHQ they don't know how much more they can take. They said a motorhome is attracting all kinds of trouble. Piles of trash surround it, and neighbors said it is a magnet for crime. They said even human waste is going into the roadway. "It's a war zone," said one neighbor. "It's nothing but trouble," said another.
