Mayor Verner Commends Law Enforcement On MLK Bomb Arrest

KHQ.COM - Spokane Mayor Mary Verner today commended the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes local, state, and federal law enforcement officials, following the arrest today of a suspect in the placement of an explosive device along the route of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Unity March on Jan. 17.

"Ensuring the safety of our citizens and visitors has been my paramount concern since that day," said Mayor Verner. "Our local, state, and federal law enforcement team worked together to move this investigation forward to today's arrest, and they have my thanks.

"Collaboration and hard work is what defines this investigation and our community, not the violent acts of a few," the Mayor continued. "I am confident that the person or persons responsible for the device will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

The Spokane Police Department worked with federal officials throughout the investigation and also has taken steps to ensure greater protection of citizens at community events. The Mayor stressed that the City would continue to provide any additional support needed to bring this case to its ultimate resolution.

The Mayor also reminded citizens to continue to be vigilant of their surroundings as they go about their daily lives. "Our citizens are extra eyes and ears for law enforcement.  We know now that the quick thinking of a few individuals clearly saved lives," Mayor Verner said.
