Small Tsunami Waves Forecasted For Washington
KHQ.COM - The National Weather Service has issued a Tsunami Advisory for the coastal areas of Washington after a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck Japan. Waves were expected to hit the Washington coast around 7 a.m. this morning.
The National Weather Service predicts the following wave heights in Washington: Moclips: 3.9 feet Long Beach: 2.6 feet Westport: 1.8 feet Neah Bay: 1.3 feet Bellingham: 1.0 feet Port Angeles: 0.9 feet.
A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected. Significant widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory.
Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.
Oregon, California and Alaska are under a Tsunami Warning. A Tsunami Warning means that a tsunami with significant widespread inundation is imminent or expected.
Warnings indicate that widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents is possible and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.
