Armed Robbery Suspect: 'Sorry Bro, Gotta Pay The Bills'

SPOKANE, Wash. – A Spokane man is accused of robbing three convenience stores and apparently apologizing at one location by telling the teller, "Sorry bro, gotta pay the bills."

Court affidavits outline the apology by Joseph Maine at a small grocery store on March 26. Prosecutors allege Maine displayed a gun in three robberies within the last week, demanded money and stole at least $350 total.

Maine told investigators he used a BB gun and confessed to the three robberies during an interview, according to court documents.

He told detectives he had a family to support, was not working and had an addiction to heroin.

Maine was arrested Wednesday night at his parent's home in Spokane Valley. Detectives served a search warrant at the family home after the arrest and found a BB gun in a location Maine described for authorities.

Detectives say they also found used needles under a mattress used by Maine's daughter.

Maine faces three counts of armed robbery and is being held in the Spokane County Jail.
