Keller Ferry Out of Service
WILBUR, Wash. - The Keller Ferry on SR 21 is out of service due to problems with the loading dock and ramp on the north shore of the ferry route. The problem is expected to persist through the weekend. Washington State Department of Transportation crews are working on the issue and hope to have the problem fixed by early next week.
WSDOT is encouraging drivers to use alternate routes to cross the Columbia. Those routes include heading downstream to SR 174 and crossing near the Grand Coulee Dam or heading upstream to SR 25 and crossing near Kettle Falls.
The problem with the north shore landing happened on April 7th while crews where attempting to move the dock assembly to an alternate location that would allow the ferry to operate when Lake Roosevelt is drawn down.
According to WSDOT spokesperson Al Gilson, "as the ramp and dock approached the shore, the flotation bag supporting the hinged ramp failed and the ramp became lodged on an offshore sand/mud spit." Gilson went on the say that crews were bringing in heavy equipment to raise the ramp assembly out of the water and pull it to shore.
