No Death Benefits For Military During Shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon says a government shutdown would delay the $100,000 death benefit paid to families if a military service member dies in the line of duty during the shutdown.

Families would get the money eventually, after the government re-opens.

A Pentagon official says if a shutdown ends by next Tuesday the military may get full paychecks on April 15th. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel details.

If the shutdown goes longer, military personnel would get only partial pay. The official says about 400,000 of the Defense Department's 800,000 civilian employees will be furloughed, while all military members will report to work. In the Pentagon, the roughly 16,000
military members will work, as will about half of the 7,000 civilians.

Sarcastic Kris: I'm at a loss for words.

Angela Lusher Pearson: The money is still there & will come, but definitely delayed.

Aj N Salina Shelp: So glad I fought for my country but yet so sad to see our own Govt. Turn their backs on the ones who fight and fought for our freedom!!!!!! SAD!!!

Nick Dean: At what point do we say enough is enough. If the goverment shuts down, whats to stop people from invading our country and we have a full scale war on our hands. I dont want that to happen but for me it's a scary thought. I say we impeach everyone and start over. Instill the morals and beliefs of out fore fathers.

Dena Erickson: Thank You for serving, Die while fighting and the Gov't says No Pay? sorry I'd walk.

Cherie Sebastian: My husband is in Iraq right now and I am here in Spokane raising our 8 year old daughter who doesn't understand why her dad has to be gone for a year at a time. It is already showing on his pay stub for April 15th that he is getting half a paycheck. They should be ashamed of themselves for this.

Shannon Lear: omg :(

LaSondra Horn Edwards: ‎8O .....bleh this is just so wrong. The Soldiers have to continue to work, they should be paid under any circumstance.

Shay Mcconnell: lets take the benifits, and vacations away from ALL politicians! that way they can get to work on whats really important...our military. they are serving our country for US (including ALL those stuck up politicians) they should be paid before any of the "decision makers"....sheesh

Shannon Hargrave Craig: thats not cool....they risk their lives everyday for all of us...just cause the govnmt is shutting down for their own issues doesnt mean that our heroes need to suffer!

Darrell Hoerner: the Government doing to gone to cut social security that wrong

Cherie Sebastian: And if he dies during the shut down, I'll be broke and I won't be able to bury him. Please God don't take my husband away from us when he is overseas working for our country and worrying about his family.

Paulette Oots-Robbins: Well there's your change people! The politicians need there paycut! And need to put there A$$ on the frontline like our military personel!

Tabby Leah: Nice , now lives are being used for barter ? SERIOUS ? HOW the HE** do they think this will effect the war already going ... our enamies get double points for taking one out now, cause they take the families livelyhood back home AND another of OUR soldiers LIFE.... Ive tried to understand both sides but the white house has its head up thier backside further than I can bend

Geraldine Torgrimson: this is so sad, look how hard our military have fought for this country & they have to go without. my husband is retired military was in korean conflict & viet nam. but yet our wonderul senators & representatives in both parties cant agree but they get their pay. now that election is over they tend to forget about all of us.this is not right, my husband is retired military & they get so few benefits. totally unfair.

Stacie Anne Ramey: That is very wrong!

Sherice Potter: WTF?? I think that's total B.S.!!! What is happening??!!

>Sharon Schultz: the Army pay stubs are out for the pay checks on the 15th, half pay for our Military wtf?
