Powerful Storm Rips Through St. Louis Airport

ST. LOUIS, MO. -  A powerful storm packing heavy rain, hail and tornadoes pummeled the St. Louis area late Friday, blowing out glass at the airport and overturning cars in the garage, authorities said.

At least five people were treated for minor injuries at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, said airport spokesman Jerry Lea. Four were taken to the hospital.

Lea said the injuries were believed to be from shattered glass.

The storm blew out glass on Concord C, airport officials said, and the National Weather Service said the roof may have been blown off. Upper-level terminals were damaged and vehicles were reported overturned at the parking garage. An Air National Guard facility at the airport was also reportedly damaged.

The airport was closed shortly before 9 p.m. due to tornado damage, the FAA said. Planes were diverted to other locations.

There were no reports of damage to any planes, KSDK-TV reported.

Damage, possibly from a tornado, was also reported at several towns near the airport, including Maryland Heights, Bridgeton, St. Ann, Ferguson and Florissant. Interstate 270 in that area was closed.

A tractor-trailer was sitting on its end.

A dispatcher for the Maryland Heights police department said a tornado hit the area Friday evening, and that roofs were "completely" ripped off homes. She said several officers were out dealing reports of gas leaks, sparking power lines and downed trees that were blocking roadways.

Unconfirmed tornadoes were reported near New Melle and Dardenne Prairie in St. Charles County. St. Charles County Sheriff's Lt. Craig McGuire said there were early reports of at least 20 homes damaged in the county.

"It was pretty wicked," he said.
