Suspect Commends Spokane Police K-9

SPOKANE, Wash. - On Wednesday night Spokane Police Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at G & B Grocery at 2104 E. Francis. The victim reported that two male suspects entered the store demanding cash and cigarettes, stating that they had a gun. After getting the cigarettes and money, the two suspects fled the store.

Spokane Police Officer Ben Yinger quickly arrived in the area and spotted the two suspects at Napa and Decatur. Officer Yinger was able to safely get one of the suspects in custody without incident while the other fled on foot westbound. Multiple officers responded to the scene, including K-9 Officer Shawn Kendall and his dog, Stryder.

Officer Kendall and Stryder tracked the outstanding suspect to inside a garage off of the south alley of the 1700 block of E. Decatur. The suspect was hiding under a mattress and had a splitting maul with him. The money and cigarettes were recovered, but no gun was located.

Arrested for 1st Degree Robbery were Steven A. Shoffner, 22 years old, from Medical Lake, and Jenson T. Richards, 23 years old, of Spokane. Shoffner was transported to a local hospital for treatment of very minor injuries resulting from his K-9 capture.
