Washington Lawmakers Strike Budget Deal

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Lawmakers have reached a tentative agreement on how to close the $5 billion budget shortfall that Washington state faces in the next two years.

Budget negotiators struck the deal in a meeting Monday morning. They declined to discuss specifics of the spending plan and will spend the day compiling the details before presenting it to their respective colleagues and the public on Tuesday.

Republican Sen. Joe Zarelli says all sides offered concessions in the negotiations. Democratic Sen. Ed Murray says he expects lawmakers will be able to approve the plan before the special
session ends Wednesday.

The budget agreement leaves one more major hurdle for lawmakers to clear. They are still negotiating a deal that would lower the state's debt limit.
