Dave Law hit the road to check out a couple of fishing holes last week. The two places were as different from each other as you could get, but both offered decent fishing and a lot of fun.>>

Ahhh, Banks Lake! Dad and I hooked into some nice Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass there last week. Warming water temperatures are key this time of year for catching those bass as they head for the shallows and begin to make their beds. Click on the picture for the full story...>>

I spent yesterday Northern Pike fishing on a 15 mile stretch of the Pend Oreille River from south of Usk, through Cusick, and north toward Ruby. There were a few empty trailers at the Cusick boat launch and the boats on the river appeared to be doing the same thing we were…>>
A typical opening day on this lake (2007 photo) can be quite busy, but a few weeks later, the fishing pressure relaxes quite a bit. It's a beautiful spring day on West Medical Lake and I'm trying to hook into one of the 2150 large trout plants within this serene, 230-acre body of water. It's surprising to see just a few fishermen and boats out for such a nice day. Apparently, word is out that the fishing is slow and requires a little patience to net one of those lunker rainbows. My day turned out better than expected! I got several strikes fly fishing nymphs, fought & lost a few big, acrobatic & pissed-off rainbows...but proudly capped my day with a 4 pound/21 inch lunker. Woo-Hoo! Bait fishermen were also getting a few nice ones in the 2-3lb range using green colored Powerbait (rainbow is also a favorite). Observations & Tips: The water temperature was fairly even throughout the water column (58° on the surface to 57° at 33ft). Trout stomach contents revealed loads of chronomids and emerald-green damselfly nymphs. Several of those nymphs were clinging to the side of my boat when I loaded it on the trailer. So, for now…"go green" on West Medical Lake.
2 days later: I'm out on a one-fly fly-fishing contest and registered to fish with a black /red colored woolybugger. After 2 1/2 hours in the float tube, only 3 hits and one fish lost. Altogether, I saw 4 fish landed amongst the crowd...fishing was a bit slow. In hindsight, I should have taken my own advice and "gone green." Who knows…It worked earlier?
