Spokane County Jail Moves To Emergency Booking Status

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. - The inmate population has exceeded 620 inmates for more than 24 hours. The jail is now on emergency booking status limiting the types of misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges the facility will accept and/or hold.

The Spokane County Jail was originally designed to hold 462 inmates. Despite modifications over the years any number above 600 is considered overcrowded.

On Sunday night more than half of the 46 inmates on the 6-West wing began acting out after a newly-assigned deputy turned out lights earlier than normal. Inmates began kicking and pounding on cell doors and began trying to flood their cells.

Ringleaders were identified and one of them refused to cuff-up to be isolated in another part of the jail. He was eventually pepper-sprayed and later decontaminated before being moved to another cell.

Three other ringleaders were removed and placed in other areas of the jail but staff began running out of available cells where each inmate could be isolated.

With the agitators gone other inmates quieted down and water was turned on in the wing.  However, the cells remained on lockdown until Tuesday when additional staff became available to review the incident and determine if any other cell assignment changes were necessary.
