Army Corps Working To Protect Road In Pend Oreille County

CUSICK, Wash. – Authorities from the Army Corps of Engineers are in Cusick working to save a major road that is threatened by rising water from the Pend Oreille River. Engineers from Seattle drove to Pend Oreille County after authorities in Cusick declared an emergency.

Flood waters eroded land along the shore banks under a bike path and shoulder of River Road. Authorities worried the road itself could cave if the land underneath it was not reinforced.

The Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle reviewed pictures of the scene and traveled to Pend Oreille County this weekend. Crews are working to drop at least 2,000 tons of rock and debris near the side of the road to protect the infrastructure.

River Road is used by cars traveling between the towns of Cusick and Usk. Closure of the road would force traffic to detour around the towns on Highway 20.

Traffic is currently restricted on River Road to one lane until the Corps finishes their work. Authorities estimate they will finish dumping rock near Cusick on Tuesday evening.

People in Cusick have been watching the Pend Oreille River rise since early May. The town's mayor says the river will stay below the road and not damage homes, but he is worried about future damage to the roadway.

Out of the corner of your eye, Ollie might be mistaken for a dog... he's that big! Not your normal house cat, Ollie is a Savannah cat, a hybrid breed that's a cross between a serval cat and a domestic cat. So while it's not surprising that he's bigger than a domestic cat, his size is still shocking.
