Summer Officially Arrives; Mother Nature Takes Her Cue

Spokane, Wash. - Summer officially arrived at 10:16 a.m. Pacific time today, the instant the Northern Hemisphere reached the summer solstice. Taking her cue, Mother Nature is offering up some warm weather (finally) to accompany the season change, with highs today in the 70s and tomorrow into the 80s.

Though the summer solstice lasts only an instant, the term is often used to refer to the full day and night on the day of the event — the so-called longest day of the year because of the maximum daylight.

The bad news is after today, the days will begin to continually get shorter, all the way until the winter solstice in January.

The solstice occurs when the sun's position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance from the equatorial plane; in other words, the sun will appear in the sky to be at its northernmost point of the year today.

Conversely, today marks the winter solstice south of the equator. People there will experience their shortest daylight period of the year.
