Gay Marriage Headed To Vote On NY Senate Floor
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A long-awaited vote on gay marriage in New York could happen as soon as tonight after Republicans in the state Senate agreed to send it to the floor.
Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos says the bill will come to the floor and be brought up for an "up or down vote".
All 32 Republicans have approved stronger religious protections. Skelos says it will be a "vote of conscience for every member of this senate."
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo lobbied hard for the bill and has promised to sign it. If the full Senate approves it, the nation's third-most populous state will join Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C., in allowing same-sex couples to wed.
