Bank Robber Caught With Help From Alert Citizen

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: Spokane Police responded to a hold up alarm at 9:45 this morning at the Wells Fargo, Monroe/Francis. The holdup was confirmed with employees. They said a man brandishing a gun came into the bank demanding money and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

An alert citizen driving north on Monroe saw a male running south bound on the sidewalk with an orange powder billowing from something he was carrying. She was able to turn around and follow him, see him get into a car, and provide the car description and a license plate number to 911.

An officer caught up with the suspect vehicle on Government Way and was going to wait for back up before he tried to stop the car.

The suspect (later identified as 43 year old Lawerence A. Wideman) started to speed up as if he noticed that he was being followed. Wideman then crashed through a fence at a military cemetery just off of Government Way and Houston.

Wideman came to a dead end, stopped the car and fled on foot.  Officers were able to take him into custody near the Spokane River. He is being booked for 1st Degree Robbery.

No one was injured during the robbery. Both the gun and the money were recovered.  Detectives will be obtaining a search warrant for Wideman's car in order to obtain any additional evidence.
