WATCH: Amanda Knox's Mother 'Optimistic' After DNA Study

HUFFINGTONPOST.COM - Amanda Knox's mother is speaking out about new revelations in the appeals case that she hopes might overturn her daughter's conviction for murder.

Speaking from Perugia, Italy, Edda Mellas told "Today" that Monday had been "a really good day" for her daughter, who was convicted with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito of the 2007 murder and sexual assault of their roommate, Meredith Kercher.

Kercher was found partially naked with her throat cut. Prosecutors believe her death was part of a sex game.

A new forensics report revealed in the Italian court on Monday appears to discredit the DNA evidence used to implicate Knox and Sollecito in the slaying. Independent experts told the appeals court that the collection of evidence fell below international standards and may have resulted in contamination, the Associated Press reported.

Knox, 24, was convicted in 2009 and is currently serving a 26-year prison sentence.

After four years, Mellas told the morning show that she, her daughter, and the young woman's legal team were all heartened by Monday's revelations, but "really cautious about how hopeful we get."
