Caravan To Catch A Killer

KHQ.COM - Maggie Zingman has arrived in Spokane. It's been a 46,000 mile journey that began in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She's hit every place from New York all the west to Spokane. But for Zingman, this is anything but a joyride. She's trying to solve a murder mystery. A mystery that began the morning of September 27, 2004.

"At one a.m. that morning I got a knock on the door, I live in a small town called Chandler, and the Sheriff said, are you Maggie Zingman, you need to call Tulsa Police. Your daughter's been murdered," Zingman said.

Zingman's daughter Brittany Phillips had just returned from college. She had a full ride scholarship in Chemistry, but since she was a year ahead of the rest of her class, she wanted to come home for a bit.

"She decided to get an apartment outside of the high school that she graduated from and within four months of her being home she was raped and suffocated inside that apartment in the middle of the night," Zingman said.

Phillips was buried on her 19th birthday. Since Brittany's murder authorities investigated more than 2000 possible suspects since they do have DNA, but to this day there has been no match. Following her daughter's death and the lack of arrests, Zingman said she knew had to do something. So October 17th, 2007 she started her "Caravan to Catch a Killer."

"I started driving across every sixth months or so, trying to get tips on her murder," Zingman said.

This is now her 8th caravan since her daughter's death. She has plans to drive 3,000 more miles on this tour continuing to raise awareness of the 2004 murder. September 27th, 2011 will mark the seven year anniversary of the tragedy.
