Authorities Say "Balloon Bomb" Likely Behind Mysterious Boom In Spokane Valley

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Authorities in Spokane Valley are investigating an apparent balloon bomb after hundreds of people reported a loud explosion east of Spokane on Wednesday night.

Jayne Singleton is the director of the Spokane Valley Heritage Museum near the intersection of Pines and Sprague.  She called KHQ-TV after seeing our report on the loud sound to report what she found in her parking lot on Thursday morning.

"It makes sense," she said.  "I got to work and found a bouquet of balloons in the parking lot."

Deputies searched several square blocks on Wednesday night after fielding calls of an explosion, but authorities were unable to locate the source of an explosion that night.

Authorities collected approximately two-dozen balloons tied together with string and an exploded garbage bag that Singleton found on Thursday.

Chief Rick Van Leuven from the Spokane Valley Police Department said his officers will investigate the device to the full extent of the law.

He declined to speculate what was in the exploded garbage bag.
