SAN BRUNO, Calif. (August 19, 2011 – http://www.gozags.com) – The new-look West Coast Conference men's basketball schedule was released Friday and Gonzaga University will play the first game under the new nine-team alignment.
As a result of BYU joining the WCC July 1, the conference basketball season will begin prior to New Year's Day for the first time and feature 16 conference games for each school.
The Bulldogs will host the University of Portland Wednesday, Dec. 28, to tip off the new era of WCC basketball, the first of three straight home games for Gonzaga.
The traditional travel partners are also a thing of the past. For instance, Gonzaga will host Pepperdine University Jan. 5 with Santa Clara University in town Jan. 7, a switch from having the traditional Pepperdine/Loyola Marymount University matchups on a weekend.
The Bulldogs make their first WCC road tip of the season Jan. 12 at Saint Mary's College and Jan. 14 at LMU.
The re-match of last year's NCAA Tournament Third Round game between Gonzaga and WCC newcomer BYU takes place Feb. 2 in Provo, Utah, as Gonzaga plays the newest WCC member for the first time in WCC action. The Cougars will be the final home game for the Zags Feb. 23 before Gonzaga concludes the WCC season Feb. 25 at the University of San Diego.
The 2012 Zappos.com West Coast Conference Basketball Championships will take place from February 29-March 5 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. A first-round game between the eighth and ninth place teams will take place Feb. 29. The Second Round, with No. 5 facing the First Round Winner and No. 6 and No. 7 meeting, takes place March 1. The Quarterfinals, with the third-place team facing the winner of the No. 5/First Round winner and the fourth-place team meeting the winner of the No. 6/7 matchup, will be March 2. The semifinals, with the top two seeds receiving byes into the semifinals, will be held March 3. No. 1 will face either the fourth, sixth or seventh seed, with the No. 2 seed facing either the third, fifth, eighth or ninth seed.
The teams will take Sunday off, with the championship Monday for the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
In June, the West Coast Conference announced an eight-year extension of its partnership with ESPN. The WCC-ESPN television schedule will be announced on Monday.
The Bulldogs also announced they will host Eastern Washington University in the regular-season and home opener Nov. 11, the latest non-conference game to be added to the slate. The Bulldogs had previously announced they would have non-conference home games with Washington State University Nov. 14, the University of Notre Dame Nov. 30, Michigan State University Dec. 10 and Butler University Dec. 20. Gonzaga is also slated for road games Dec. 3 at the University of Illinois and Dec. 31 at Xavier University. The Zags will face the University of Arizona Dec. 17 in the Battle in Seattle.
