The Kootenai County sheriff's office says River Deshazer is hospitalized in Spokane, Wash., after the accident that killed her 5-year-old brother, Evan Deshazer. Investigators say 25-year-old Sarah Deshazer of Coeur d'Alene was trying to turn an SUV around on a narrow road Sunday afternoon when one wheel went off the road, causing the SUV to slide down an
embankment into Lake Fernan, east of Coeur d'Alene.
Sarah and her husband, 28-year-old Michael Deshazer, were able to get out of the vehicle, but could not reach their children before it sank in about 12 feet of murky water.
UPDATE: The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation of the traffic crash that occurred on Sunday afternoon on Fernan Lake Road that left a 5-year-old boy dead and a 1-year-old girl in critical condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
The children involved in the collision have been identified as 5-year-old Evan Deshazer and 1-year-old River Deshazer.
Evan was pronounced dead at Kootenai Medical Center on Sunday and River was air-lifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane where she remains in critical condition.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy of the deceased boy today.
The Sheriff's Office Traffic Investigation Team is conducting the investigation. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
UPDATE: A 5-year-old Coeur d'Alene boy is dead and his year-old brother is in critical condition after their car slid off a road and plunged into an Idaho lake.
The Kootenai County Sheriff's office says the boys' mother, 25-year-old Sarah Deshazer, was trying to turn their SUV around Sunday afternoon when a wheel went off the road and sent the
vehicle went down an embankment into Lake Fernan, just east of Coeur d'Alene.
Spokesman Maj. Ben Wolfinger says in a release that she and her husband, 28-year-old Michael Deshazer, escaped before the SUV sank but could not reach the children before it plunged into 12 feet of murky water.
Firefighters reached the brothers shortly after the 1:45 p.m. accident and began CPR.
Wolfinger says they were rushed to a hospital where the 5-year-old was pronounced dead. The younger child is in critical condition.
COEUR d' ALENE, Idaho - According to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department an accident Sunday afternoon at Fernan Lake in Coeur d'Alene left one child dead and another in serious condition at Sacred Heart.
Authorities report a black SUV was backing up on Fernan Lake Rd. in Coeur d'Alene when the car pitched into the lake.
Four people were in the car when it went over, a 5-year-old, a 1-year-old and their parents.
The two children in the car were submerged for 15 to 20 minutes while crews worked to get them out.
Both children were rushed to Kootenai County Medical Center where the 5-year-old was pronounced dead. The 1-year-old was moved to Sacred Heart and is listed in serious condition.
Both of the parents made it out alive.
Multiple witnesses spoke to KHQ and described the boys as "lifeless" after they were extracted from the vehicle.
