SPOKANE, Wash. - Firefighters say they now have a brush fire that was threatening homes in the Hangman Valley area completely knocked down and as of 7:00 pm Saturday night, 20 percent contained.

Fire officials on scene say they received the call of a brush fire near the Hangman Valley Golf Course just after 3:00pm Saturday afternoon. When they arrived they found a fast-growing brush fire in between Hangman Valley Road and South Baltimore Rd. At its peak the fire threatened about a dozen homes and forced the evacuations of residents nearby. Thanks to support from numerous county agencies, back up from the city of Spokane, and air support dropping water and fire retardant, crews were able to get control of the fire before any homes or structures were destroyed.

Firefighters expect to be on scene for the next couple of hours mopping up any hot spots.
