Coeur d' Alene School Bus Routes Changed, Eliminated
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) - The Coeur d'Alene School District has discontinued bus service along several miles of routes in rural Kootenai County.
The district says the move is expected to save roughly $93,000 during a cash-strapped budget year.
But some parents are upset with the decision to make them to transport their children to the nearest bus stop.
School districts are required to provide transportation to students who live more than 1.5 miles from their school, under state law.
But Idaho also allows districts to designate areas where providing transportation is deemed impractical.
Districts can designate these areas as "non-transportation zones" and discontinue bus service, instead offering parents a mileage reimbursement if the nearest bus stop is more than 1.5 miles from their home.
