Co. Commissioners To Revisit Closing Of Ben Burr Road

SPOKANE, Wash. - Tonight Spokane County Commissioners are expected to re-visit a controversial measure that would permanently close Ben Burr Road, between 57th Avenue and 61st Avenue near Moran Prairie Elementary on the South Hill, for commercial development.

Local developer Dave Black is seeking to commercially develop several acres of land just west of Moran Prairie Elementary. Black has said that "Yokes is interested" in being part of the development.

In exchange, Black would pay for the construction of a pedestrian trail along the west side of Moran Prairie Elementary for students.

The proposal by Black faced strong neighborhood opposition four years ago, and the commissioners unanimously rejected it.

On Monday night neighborhood residents met at the Moran Prairie Library to rally opposition to the proposal.

A public hearing will be held tonight at 5:30 in the basement of the county Public Works Building at 1026 W. Broadway, next to the county courthouse.

Commission Board Chair Al French told KHQ's Dave Cotton Tuesday afternoon that a final decision would not, in all likelihood, be made at this evening's hearing.
