Moped Rider Killed In Crash With Police Cruiser
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) - A 62-year old moped rider has been killed in a crash with a Pierce County sheriff's deputy who was responding to a call for backup.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reports that the accident occurred at about 7 p.m. Thursday in University Place. Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer says the deputy was trying to help a reserve officer who was looking for suspects who fled during a traffic stop.
The deputy struck the moped rider, a Fircrest man who was wearing a helmet, and went over an embankment. Troyer says the deputy is despondent over the crash.
West Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters had to extricate the deputy from his patrol car. He is being treated for moderate injuries at Tacoma General Hospital.
