WSP Investigating Highest-Paid Employee Who Made 163,000 Last Year

SEATTLE (AP) - The Washington State Patrol is investigating a lieutenant in the Bellevue office who was paid about $163,000 last year, making him the highest-paid patrol employee.

The Seattle Times reports William Gardiner has been assigned to home duty during the investigation.

State records show he earned $91,000 in regular pay and about $72,000 in overtime. He's a 25-year veteran planning to retire this year.

His supervisor, Capt. Steve Burns, has been demoted to lieutenant and reassigned to work with Washington state ferries. A patrol spokesman says Chief John Batiste loss confidence in Burns
for allowing Gardiner to assign his own overtime.
