Obama Jabs Republicans As He Seeks Votes On Jobs, Piece By Piece

FLETCHER, N.C. (AP) - President Barack Obama is jabbing Republicans as he pushes for Congress to pass parts of his jobs initiative after the full package was blocked by the Senate.

At a stop in North Carolina today, Obama said maybe Senate Republicans "just couldn't understand the whole thing at once" -- so he'll break up bill into "bite-sized pieces" for them.

He spoke outside Asheville as he began a three-day bus tour of North Carolina and Virginia. Republicans are denouncing the bus trip as nothing more than a taxpayer-funded campaign trip through two states that are considered must-wins in the 2012 election.

Obama has pledged to travel the country pitching his plans to get Americans back to work, but so far his stops have focused heavily on political swing states.

The Senate's top Democrat is expected to announce today the timing of votes on pieces of the plan. The White House says a quick vote is expected on a $35 billion package of aid to states to retain or hire teachers, police and firefighters.
