DEVELOPING: Tensions Flare Between US & Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration is hitting two top Iranian military officials with travel and financial sanctions for alleged human rights abuses.

The Treasury Department on Tuesday added the chairman of Iran's joint chiefs of staff, the country's most senior military officer, and the deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to a blacklist. The move freezes any assets they may have in the U.S. and bars Americans from transactions with them. The State Department also barred the two men from entering the U.S.

The two are accused of complicity in serious abuses following Iran's disputed 2009 elections, including a crackdown on protesters and mistreatment of detainees.

The sanctions measures may have little direct effect since the U.S. and Iran have no military ties and few financial or commercial ones.
