RATHDRUM, Idaho - At approximately 12:35 p.m. Wednesday Northern Lakes Fire District was called to a house fire where the reporting person said that the house was engulfed in flames.  Responding crews called for a second alarm.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the house fully involved with the homeowner outside the home with no other occupants. The adult male homeowner was later transported to Kootenai Health with no further information on condition.

Due to the extent of the fire upon arrival, crews went into a defensive mode to protect several structures near to the home including wood shed, storage shed, and barn. The house was a total loss  (no estimate of value) with closer structures receiving some fire damage but no fire damage to barn. It is unknown whether homeowner has house insurance.

At this time the cause of the fire is undetermined but according to the homeowner's statement, an ember from a wood stove fire came out of the open firebox door and landed on a recliner type chair, which the homeowner was not able to extinguish.

Crews from Northern Lakes, Spirit Lake, Hauser Lake, and Timberlake Fire responded.
