Lewiston Man Riding In Wheelchair In Critical Condition After Getting Hit
LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) - Police in Lewiston say several people reported seeing a person wearing dark clothing maneuvering a wheelchair in and out of traffic shortly before an SUV struck a wheelchair at a city intersection.
Police Capt. Roger Lanier says the wheelchair was in the middle of the traffic lane when it was struck at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The driver of the SUV tried to swerve onto the shoulder, but the wheelchair had no reflectors or lights and the driver didn't see it
Lanier tells the Lewiston Tribune that 34-year-old Jacob Vernon of Clarkston, Wash., remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday night. Police say Vernon has been in a wheelchair since a 2000 rollover crash.
The results of the investigation will be turned over to the Nez Perce County prosecutor's office.
